A lawsuit in France against the Syrian transitional president and Syrian ministers over the recent Syrian coast killing events
The UK based, Syrian Observatory for Human Rights announced on Friday that the French Public Prosecutor’s Office has officially agreed to consider a lawsuit against the head of the transitional government in Syria, Ahmed al Sharaa, and a number of his ministers, on charges related to committing serious crimes, including ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity.
The lawsuit is supported by an extensive judicial memorandum, where the complaint, filed by French lawyer Pedro Androgard on behalf of the French-Alawite Collective, is based on a detailed memorandum accusing the al Shaaa government of leading an organized campaign targeting members of the Alawite sect in Syria, and documents serious violations that occurred, particularly on the Syrian coast.
The lawsuit includes high-profile government figures, including Defense Minister Marhaf Abu Qasra, Interior Minister Anas Khattab, and Mohammed al Jassem, known as “Abu Amsha,” commander of the 25th Division.
The charges include committing more than 50 massacres that claimed the lives of at least 2,500 civilians from the Alawite sect, in addition to victims from the Sunni and Christian sects.
Documented crimes include rape, murder, displacement, and burning of property.
According to the memorandum, the crimes varied from rape and mass murder to burning homes, in addition to refusing to issue death certificates for victims.
The charges also included targeting educational facilities and private property, and carrying out forced displacement operations believed to be aimed at systematic demographic and sectarian change.
In addition to documentation, the lawsuit demanded an immediate cessation of military operations, the withdrawal of armed groups from conflict zones, and the release of detainees, particularly from the Alawite sect.
It also called for the formation of an independent international investigation committee and the dispatch of observers and human rights experts to the affected areas.
This lawsuit is the first legal action of its kind taken in France against the head of the Syrian transitional government, Ahmad al Sharaa, and comes as the “French-Alawite Rally” prepares to organize a protest in front of the Palace of Justice in Paris on Saturday, demanding justice and revealing the truth about the massacres committed on the Syrian coast between March 7 and 9.
