A former official in Sednaya prison holds the key to a secret wards
Despite previous assurances by the Syrian Civil Defense (White Helmets) that undiscovered cells in the massive Saydnaya prison, new developments emerged.
On Wednesday that the authorities arrested a prison guard and former official at the notorious Saydnaya prison.
This person had worked in the prison since 2008, and had the codes to open several secret cells.
He also revealed that the prison guard had previously been suspected when he tried to sneak into the prison and steal some documents, which led to his arrest by the “Military Operations Department”.
During the investigations, the prison guard confessed that he worked in the prison and had information about the existence of a secret ward in Sednaya.
These developments come after the Syrian Civil Defense confirmed, after three days of searching in Sednaya prison, that their efforts had ended without finding any previously unopened cells or secret dungeons.
The Syrian Civil Defense stressed that it had searched all sections and facilities, including basements and courtyards, without discovering any secret places as was rumored among the people.
However, many former prisoners spoke of the existence of secret underground sections, described as “death prisons” or “red prisons”.
It’s noteworthy that Sednaya Prison is divided into two main sections: the White Prison, which includes wards for ordinary detainees, and the Red Prison, or “Death Prison,” which contains 18 wards for detainees who have been sentenced to death or who are being hidden by the regime without trial.
Since the fall of the Assad regime on December 8, and the control of armed factions over the capital, Damascus, dozens of prisons have been opened in various governorates, where many prisoners who spent long years without their families knowing any details about them were released.
