According to Politico website revealed that European Commissioner Thierry Breton said that former US President Donald Trump stressed during his presidency that Washington wouldn’t intervene to help Europe if any war broke out.

Britton said that Trump’s statements came during his meeting with the German President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in 2020, and it was a tense meeting, according to what was reported by the website specializing in European affairs.

Britton claims that the former US president and candidate for a new term said that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), which is led by Washington, said: “You have to understand that if Europe is attacked, we will never come to your aid and support”.

The European Commissioner responsible for industry and armaments policy said Trump added: “By the way, NATO is dead, and we are leaving, we are leaving NATO”.

According to Britton’s account reported by Politico, Trump told von der Leyen, saying: “By the way, you owe me $400 billion, because you Germans didn’t pay what you should have paid for defense”.

These statements by the European Commissioner came during a meeting in the European Parliament in Brussels, several days before Trump won the Republican nomination in the state of Iowa to run in the US presidential elections against Democratic President Joe Biden in November 2024.

There are concerns in Brussels about the possibility of Trump returning to the US presidency.

Breton had urged the European Union to strengthen its self-defense capabilities amid the Russian war in Ukraine, and on Tuesday put forward a 100 billion euro fund to increase arms production in Ukraine.

“It was a big wake-up call and he might come back,” the French European Commissioner said of Trump.

He added: “So now more than ever, we know that we depend on ourselves, of course.

“We are members of NATO, and almost all of us, of course, have allies, but we have no other options than to significantly increase this pillar so that we are prepared for what may happen”.
