US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday his administration’s intention to continue its escalatory approach, noting that the next phase will see a focus on Cuba, but after the completion of the military operations currently underway against Iran.

Trump’s remarks came during an event at the White House, where he addressed his secretary of state Marco Rubio, who is of Cuban descent, saying, “Marco, you’re doing a great job… And you’re doing a great job with Cuba”.

Describing the situation on the island, the US president added: “What is happening in Cuba is amazing”.

But he clarified the timeline of US plans, saying, “But we want to end this first,” an apparent reference to the ongoing military campaign against Iran.

In a poignant message to the Cuban-born secretary of state, Trump said, “It’s only a matter of time before you and so many other wonderful people get back to Cuba… Hopefully it won’t stay there… We want you back,” he said, referring to expectations that changes in the Cuban regime would allow the return of exiles.

Trump didn’t neglect to comment on the situation in Venezuela, expressing confidence that things are going well and that the situation is stable.

Trump praised Venezuelan President-elect Delcy Rodriguez and her team, and stressing their cooperation with Washington.

“We’re getting hundreds of millions of barrels of oil from Venezuela, sending them to Houston and other refining places, and sending them a lot more money than they’ve earned in years past,” Trump said.
