Syria: Russia strengthens its presence near the Golan heights

In a move aimed at preventing any Israeli escalation against Syria, Russian forces announced the reinforcement of their military presence at nine observation points near the separation of forces zone on the borders of the occupied Syrian Golan heights, specifically in the countryside of Dara’a and Quneitra.

These moves come in conjunction with the escalation of Israeli attacks on Syria, the ongoing aggression against Lebanon, and the continuation of the Israeli war against the Palestinians in Gaza.

According to the Syrian Official News Agency (SANA), these points were reinforced at the request of the Syrian government, within the framework of joint cooperation between Damascus and Moscow.

General Alexander Rodionov, deputy commander of the Russian forces operating in Syria, explained that the main task of these points is to carry out air and ground surveillance operations to enhance stability and security in the region, allowing local residents to return to their lands and resume their normal lives.

At a time when these reinforcements coincided with Israeli moves to build a technical wall on the Golan border, rumors were spread through the media about the withdrawal of Russian forces from the region.

However, Moscow confirmed its intensive military presence to ensure that the situation isn’t exploited to carry out any new attacks.

It’s worth noting that the Golan heights region was under the control of armed opposition factions until 2018, before a reconciliation agreement was reached through Russian mediation.

This agreement led to the transfer of militants wishing to leave to northern Syria, and enabled Syrian government to gradually resume their work.

Recent Russian moves reflect its pivotal role in maintaining regional security and strengthening the strategic partnership with Damascus to confront any attempts to destabilize the region.
