Armenia announce freezing its participation in the Collective Security Treaty Organization
Armenia’s Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinyan, said in an interview broadcast on February 22, 2024, that his country had decided to freeze its participation in the Collective Security Treaty Organization, whose sponsor is Russia, because the treaty had disappointed Armenia.
Pashinyan noted that Azerbaijan, with which it has waged wars over the past three decades, doesn’t adhere to the principles necessary to achieve a long-term peace agreement, and hinted at Azerbaijan’s readiness to carry out a new attack.
Pashinyan described the treaty of the organization, which is controlled by Russia, as disappointing Armenia, saying, “The Collective Security Treaty didn’t achieve its goals, especially in 2021 and 2022, and we cannot afford that”.
He added, “We’ve now practically frozen our participation in this treaty, and we are waiting for what comes in the future”.
Pashinyan stressed that there is no discussion about the timing of closing the Russian base in Armenia.
On the other hand, in recent months, Pashinyan expressed his dissatisfaction with the long relations with Russia, noting that Armenia cannot rely on Russia to secure its defense needs, and he had indicated that their membership in the organization is under review.
It should be noted that in 2020, Azerbaijan regained large areas in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, prompting most of the Armenian population to flee to Armenia.
