Yedioth Ahronoth: Israel is considering closing its embassy in Ireland after recognizing the state of Palestine
According to the Israeli Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, Israel is considering closing its embassy in Ireland due to Dublin’s recognition of the state of Palestine.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry is considering closing the Israeli embassy in Ireland due to its anti-Israel stance, which was demonstrated on Wednesday morning when it announced with Spain and Norway the recognition of a Palestinian state, which will take effect on May 28.
Norway, Spain and Ireland announced on Wednesday (May 22nd) the recognition of the state of Palestine, and the Palestinian presidency welcomed the announcement as “historic moments in which the free world triumphs for right and justice after decades of struggle”.
In response, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said in a statement that he had instructed the immediate recall of Israel’s ambassadors to Ireland and Norway for consultations in light of these countries’ decisions to recognize a Palestinian state.
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant immediately announced the complete repeal of the Disengagement Law in the northern West Bank, while Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich informed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to stop transferring tax funds to the Palestinian Authority.
The announcement by Norway, Ireland and Spain provoked angry reactions from Israel, which opposes the move and is considering taking action against these countries,
Yedioth Ahronoth noted that the move could also carry legal risks for Israel.
As of 2024, 146 of the UN’s 193 member states, or about 75 percent, have recognized the State of Palestine.
The State of Palestine is recognized by nine EU member countries: Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary, Cyprus, Malta and Sweden.
