A review by the US State Department’s Inspector General, dedicated to monitoring support for Kiev, says that corruption by the Ukrainian authorities threatens the long-term effectiveness of aid, and stresses the need for strict control.

“In the longer term, especially given that the Department plans to help repair and rebuild Ukraine, corruption in the Ukrainian government and private sector poses risks to the effectiveness of US foreign aid that require strict oversight”.

The expansion of the staff of the US Embassy in Kiev will allow for more inspections and improve the ability to monitor the aid provided.

The report confirmed that the US Embassy to Ukraine had already studied these recommendations and approved such measures.
