Washington Post: Palestinians Subjected to Violence in Israel Prisons

The Washington Post said Monday that violence is widely used against Palestinians in Israel prisons.

According to the Washington Post who interviewed former Palestinian prisoners and representatives of non-governmental organizations working in this field and the examination of autopsy reports.

The Washington Post said that a Palestinian prisoner was beaten by guards at the Israeli prison where he was held, breaking his ribs and killing him.

One Palestinian prisoner died as a result of not being treated for his chronic illness, and the other as a result of not intervening despite screaming for help for hours.

The three are among 13 Palestinians from the West Bank and Israel who have died in Israeli jails since Oct 7 October.

Human rights organizations reported a serious deterioration in conditions in overcrowded Israeli prisons and widespread violence.

Jessica Montiel, executive director of the Israel-based human rights organization HaMoked, said, “Violence everywhere, overcrowding, every prisoner we met lost 30 kilograms of weight”.

Witnesses recorded guards raiding all cells in the ward and handcuffing inmates before beating them.

One witness, a 28-year-old former prisoner, said guards assaulted them like crazy, kicked them and beat them with batons.

Ibrahim, the brother of 33-year-old Abdul Rahman al Ma’ari, who died in Megiddo prison in November, stated that his brother was detained at a makeshift checkpoint in February 2023 and charged with belonging to Hamas and possessing a firearm.

Ibrahim stated that he had lost contact with his brother after October 7, 2023.

In the autopsy report examined by Dr. Danny Rosen of Physicians for Human Rights in Israel, it was stated that al Ma’ari’s ribs were broken, and deformities were seen in the back, hip, left arm, head and neck.

Khairy Hamad, 32, who was detained in the same section, said that al Ma’ari was thrown on the stairs handcuffed and suffered bleeding from his head, on the pretext that he had responded with words to guards during a search of the cell.

He reported that al Ma’ari left hours in pain and asking for help until he died.
