Washington amends the classification of the Syrian mission to the United Nations

The United States has amended the classification of the Syrian mission at the United Nations headquarters in New York, reclassifying it as a mission representing a government recognized by Washington.
Last April, the United States made changes to the legal status of the Syrian mission to the United Nations, changing its classification from a permanent mission representing the Syrian government to a mission of a government not recognized by Washington.
The amendments also included changing the type of visas granted to mission members to “G3” visas, which are typically granted to representatives of UN missions or governments not recognized by the United States.
In response to this move, the Syrian Foreign Ministry asserted that this US measure is a “technical and administrative change” and doesn’t reflect any shift in Washington’s position toward the new Syrian government.
