The US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz said Tuesday he takes full responsibility for a blatant security breach that occurred when he mistakenly included a journalist in a top-secret correspondent group in which senior officials discussed launching airstrikes against the Houthi rebels in Yemen.

“I take full responsibility for this mistake… I created this group on Signal app,” Waltz told Fox News in his first interview since the scandal broke.

Waltz stressed that he did not personally know The Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg, whom he mistakenly added to the messaging group, suggesting he had saved his number on his phone, mistaking it for someone else.

“We have the best technical teams trying to understand how this happened,” he added.

“I don’t know this guy, I only know him by his reputation, which is terrible,” he continued, “But I don’t write to him”.

Waltz’s admission of responsibility for the leak came after President Donald Trump and senior US intelligence officials sought to contain the expanding scandal.

On Tuesday evening, Trump said in an interview with Newsmax that it was possible that someone working for Mike Waltz had added the journalist to the Signal messaging group.
