US Congressman Joe Wilson urged the Trump administration to expedite the removal of Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, arguing that positive developments in relations between Washington and Damascus could pave the way for a new era of cooperation and stability.

In a post on X, Wilson stated that the recent steps taken by the Trump administration toward Syria reflect a positive shift, citing the appointment of Tom Barrack as Special Presidential Envoy to Syria and Iraq, as well as the recent phone call between Trump and Syrian President Ahmed al Sharaa.

He added that removing the long-standing designation imposed on Syria would contribute to supporting stability, stimulating economic growth, and opening broader horizons for cooperation between the two countries.

The Syrian Presidency had previously announced that President Ahmed al Sharaa had a phone call with US President Donald Trump, during which they discussed bilateral relations, political and security developments in the region, and ways to enhance joint cooperation.

During the call, Sharaa emphasized the importance of continued international support for recovery and reconstruction efforts in Syria, noting that lifting the remaining sanctions is essential for revitalizing the economy, attracting investment, and improving the living conditions of Syrian citizens.

The two sides also discussed the importance of encouraging economic and development projects and creating a suitable environment for revitalizing vital sectors, which would contribute to driving economic growth in the coming period.

This comes after Trump announced the appointment of the US Ambassador to Türkiye, Tom Barrack, as Special Presidential Envoy to Syria and Iraq, while he retains his diplomatic duties in Ankara, a move that observers considered an indication of growing US interest in the region’s issues.
