The Ukrainian embassy in Mexico City on Wednesday called on the Mexican government to arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin under an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court if he attends the inauguration of President Claudia Sheinbaum.

“We’re confident that the Mexican government will respect the international arrest warrant issued against Putin, and hand him over to the UN judicial body in The Hague, if he participates in Sheinbaum’s inauguration on October 1,” the Ukrainian embassy said in a statement.

Last March, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Putin on charges of committing war crimes by transferring children from occupied areas of Ukraine to Russia.

Mexico is a signatory to the Rome Statute, the international treaty that established the International Criminal Court.

This treaty stipulates that it’s the duty of every State to bring to its criminal jurisdiction those responsible for international crimes.

In its statement, the Ukrainian embassy in Mexico described the Russian president as a “war criminal,” calling for him to be tried in court over the invasion of Ukraine that began in February 2022.

In return, the embassy thanked the Mexican government for inviting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to attend Sheinbaum’s inauguration.

Juan Ramon, whom Sheinbaum appointed as foreign minister in her government, said Wednesday that the invitation to Putin was merely a protocol exercise.

Sheinbaum, the first woman to be elected president of Mexico, will officially take office on October 1 for a six-year term.

Meanwhile, former Russian President and Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said on Thursday that Russian forces should put pressure on Odessa, Kharkov, Dnipro, Mykolaiv, Kiev and other cities in Ukraine.

Commenting on the Ukrainian breakthrough in the Kursk region, Medvedev said that Moscow’s operation should no longer be aimed solely at securing territories that Moscow considers its own.
