The US military announced the completion of its withdrawal from the 201st air base in Agadez, Niger, adding that coordination is continuing between the US armed forces and their Nigerian counterpart over the coming weeks to ensure the completion of the full withdrawal as planned.

According to a joint statement by the US military and the Nigerian Ministry of Defense, effective cooperation, and communication between the US and Nigerian Armed Forces ensures the completion of this transition ahead of schedule and without complications.

At the beginning of July, the US soldiers at the Niamey base had left the country, and about 200 elements remained at the important marching base in Agadez in the North.

The ruling military council in Niger, a year ago following a coup that overthrew elected president Mohamed Bazoum, gave the United States until September 15, 2024 to withdraw its troops.

Niger’s decision to request the withdrawal of US troops from its territory comes after a meeting in Niamey in mid-March, during which senior US officials raised concerns about issues such as the expected arrival of Russian troops, and reports about Iran’s pursuit of raw materials in the country, including uranium.
