Two US soldiers disappear during military exercises in Morocco
The Royal Moroccan Armed Forces and the US Africa Command (AFRICOM) announced on Sunday that two American soldiers went missing on Saturday evening near a rocky cliff in the Cap Draa area of Tan-Tan.
The Moroccan Armed Forces stated in a statement on their Facebook account that the two soldiers who were participating in the African Lion maneuvers went missing at approximately 21:00 (20:00 GMT) on Sunday evening.
The statement explained that Moroccan and US forces immediately began, together with the forces of other countries participating in the exercise, to carry out coordinated search and rescue operations, for which land, air and sea capabilities were harnessed.
For its part, the US Africa Command announced that it has opened an investigation to uncover the circumstances of the disappearance of the two soldiers, adding that attention is focused on them and their families, and that additional information will be provided as it becomes available.
The 22nd session of these joint military exercises between the Royal Armed Forces and the US Armed Forces officially began last Monday in the city of Agadir in southern Morocco.
These maneuvers will continue until May 8, with the participation of approximately 5,000 military personnel from more than 40 countries, in addition to experts specializing in the fields of security and defense.
