Media reports have revealed the possibility of including the deployment of the Russian S-400 air defense system in Syria as part of the terms of an upcoming defense agreement between Türkiye and the Syrian government.

According to the Turkish newspaper Daily Sabah, which is close to government circles, this scenario could help ease US pressure on Ankara, which has previously received warnings from Washington regarding its possession of the Russian system.

In the same context, sources indicated to the Middle East Eye website that Türkiye has obtained approval from the Syrian Interim Government to use the T-4 air base in the Homs countryside as a platform for stationing Turkish-made defensive and offensive systems, which could include the deployment of the S-400 or similar Turkish systems.

According to sources, the primary goal of this move is to deter repeated Israeli airstrikes on Syrian territory, as Ankara sees it necessary to establish a defensive umbrella to protect common interests.

On the other hand, Israeli media reported discussions within the security establishment in Tel Aviv about the possibility of things slipping into a direct confrontation with Türkiye inside Syrian territory, especially in light of the escalating domestic political tensions in Ankara following the arrest of Istanbul mayor, Ekrem İmamoğlu, which may push the Turkish government to export its crisis through external escalation.
