Türkiye criticize Washington’s extension of sanctions on Syria… calling it a decision that doesn’t match facts on the ground
The Turkish Foreign Ministry said that the US extension of sanctions imposed on Syria for an additional year does not conform to the facts on the ground.
This came in a statement issued by the Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman, Öncü Keçeli, on Saturday.
Keçeli explained that instead of repeating such pre-judgmental actions, supporting Turkish policies that focus on Syria’s territorial integrity and political unity will contribute to the stability of the region.
It’s noteworthy that Türkiye launched Operation Peace Spring on October 9, 2019 to neutralize “terrorists” in northern Syria, especially the PKK/YPG, within the scope of the right to self-defense arising from Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.
The United States, which was cooperating with the PKK/YPG under the pretext of fighting ISIS at the time, declared a national emergency in Syria through Presidential Decree No. 13894, claiming that the situation in the Arab country had disrupted the fight against ISIS.
The decree in question gives the United States the authority to impose sanctions on Syria.
