Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has approved a project to build advanced shelters in all 81 Turkish provinces, a move aimed at strengthening defense infrastructure and protecting civilians.

The Turkish Housing Administration (TOKİ) will implement the project, and work has already begun in several major cities, including the capital, Ankara.

According to reports, the Turkish government has studied similar international experiences, such as those of Japan and Switzerland, to benefit from them in developing shelters according to modern standards.

This decision is based on the Shelters Act of 1987, which wasn’t fully implemented, as some shelters were previously used as parking lots or warehouses.

The primary goal of the project is to protect civilians in the event of war or potential disasters, including the risk of nuclear leaks.

The Turkish report also recommended utilizing underground metro stations to provide them with fortified and integrated shelters.
