Turkish President: We asked Putin to take steps to enhance the normalization process with Syria

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan revealed that he discussed with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during their recent meeting on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan, ways to improve relations between Türkiye and Syria.

In a statement to reporters during his flight from Kazan, Erdogan explained, “From the beginning, we have always stressed our support for the territorial integrity of Syria and the establishment of comprehensive and lasting peace in the region, while committing to protecting our borders and fighting all terrorist organizations without exception,” Erdogan said.

He added, “The region is experiencing increasing tensions, and with the narrowing of the circle of conflicts, we hope that the Syrian government will realize the importance of sincere normalization with Türkiye and take appropriate steps… We aspire to see positive moves in this direction soon to develop relations between the two countries”.

Erdogan concluded by saying, “We discussed these issues with President Putin and expressed our expectations, and asked him to take the necessary measures to ensure that Syrian President Bashar al Assad responds to our calls”.
