Turkish nationalist leader calls for military campaign against SDF in cooperation with Damascus government
The leader of the Nationalist Movement Party in Türkiye, Devlet Bahçeli, criticized the SDF’s holding of municipal elections in the areas under its control in northeastern Syria, calling for coordination with the Damascus government to launch a joint military campaign against attempts to divide Syria.
Bahçeli, who is allied with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, stressed the importance of coordination between Ankara and Damascus to prevent the SDF from using democratic means in order to cover its control over the “occupied territories,” according to the Turkish newspaper Cumhuriyet.
Bahçeli stressed the need to launch a military campaign in cooperation with the Damascus forces with the aim of ending the SDF, pointing to the need to uproot the “terrorist organization” from its sources and from the areas where it multiplies, through joint military operations between the two countries.
Bahçeli considered that the upcoming elections in SDF-controlled areas are “an attempt to divide Syria under the guise of democracy,” accusing the United States of standing behind these elections.
Bahçeli praised the position of the Kurdish National Council in Syria, which refused to recognize these elections and announced a boycott, citing their position on the illegitimacy of these elections.
Bahçeli called on the United States to immediately withdraw its forces from Syria and Iraq, criticizing its continued support for the SDF.
