Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin announced that Ankara “can open a new page in its relationship with Egypt and a number of Gulf countries”.

This came in a video interview conducted by Bloomberg Agency, with a spokesman for the Turkish presidency, and published on Monday.

“A new page can be opened in our relationship with Egypt and the Gulf states, in order to help achieve regional peace and stability,” Kalin said.

In his speech, he described Egypt as “the heart of the Arab world,” pointing to the continuation of discussions between the two countries on several issues, and Ankara’s willingness to restore its relationship with Cairo.

On the other hand, he stressed that Egypt “is currently suffering from economic and security problems that Turkey fully understands”.

Kalin’s comments came after Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu’s announcement last December that his country and Egypt “are seeking to define a roadmap regarding their bilateral relations”.

At the time, he said that communication with Egypt at the intelligence level is continuing to strengthen relations, indicating that he met his Egyptian counterpart in 2019 in international meetings, and that they stressed the need to work on a road map regarding the relations of the two countries.

And based on the Turkish position rejecting the coups as an undemocratic option, Ankara opposed the overthrow of the late Mohamed Morsi, the first civilian Egyptian president elected in 2013, which led to the deterioration of relations between the two countries, but the commercial and economic relations between them continued normally.
