Trump’s chances of overturning the presidential election result diminish after the loss of Georgia
US President Donald Trump’s desperate attempt to overturn the outcome of the November 3 election was dealt another blow on Friday after announcing his loss to Georgia as President-elect Joe Biden picked more members of his next administration.
Democrat Biden is preparing to take office on January 20, but the Republican Trump is refusing to hand over and is looking for a way to nullify or overturn election results in several states, alleging widespread fraud.
On Friday, Georgia Deputy Gov. Brad Ravensberger dealt a fresh blow to the Trump campaign efforts when he asserted that the hand-counting and review of all votes had concluded Biden was the winner.
Biden became the first Democrat to win Georgia since 1992.
“I believe in the slogan numbers don’t lie,” Ravensberger said.
As the state secretary, I think the numbers we provided today are correct”.
Ravensburger described himself as proud to support Trump.
After his attempts in Georgia failed and he suffered a series of defeats in the court yards, three sources familiar with the matter said that Trump’s team is pinning its hopes on an attempt to push the legislatures, which are under the control of Republicans in other crucial states that Biden won, to suspend the results and declare Trump the winner of the vote.
The team is currently focused on Pennsylvania and Michigan, but even if the two states switch in its favor, Trump will need to overturn the outcome of the third-state vote to beat Biden in the electoral college.
Such an exceptional measure would be a precedent in modern American history.
Not only does Trump need the intervention of the legislatures in three states, as is the case now, but he will then need the approval of Congress and the Supreme Court for these measures.
Weak odds did not deter Trump.
On Friday, the President will receive Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirky at the White House, and Lee Chatfield, Speaker of the House of Representatives there.
And both belong to the Republican Party.
Biden, who turned 78, continued to lay down the rules for his administration on Friday and chose Louisa Terrell as director of the White House Office of Legislative Affairs, the main focal point with Congress, and has announced more positions.
Biden will also meet with leaders of the Democratic Party in Congress, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
Democrats are seeking to approve another trillions of dollars in rescue package to mitigate the economic impact of the Coronavirus epidemic that has killed more than 252,000 Americans.
Trump’s attempts to alter the results through appeals, lawsuits, and recount and counting of votes have had little success so far.
Despite these setbacks, the Trump campaign has not abandoned its judicial efforts and has pledged to bring more cases.
Trump’s attorneys say the US Constitution gives state legislatures, not their governors or their representatives, the final say in appointing electoral college members.
Republicans control legislatures in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
The three states were the pillars of Trump’s 2016 election victory, but Biden won them by a large margin than Trump did four years ago.
Without those states, Trump’s hopes of staying in office are dashed.
Law experts sounded a warning bell about Trump’s approach as a president in power trying to discredit a process in which voters expressed their will, although they ruled out the ability of any state legislature to nullify what the electorate decided in it.
Biden’s legal adviser, Bob Bauer, told reporters on Friday that Trump was in a desperate legal situation.
Although election officials have not found any major wrongdoing, most of the prominent Republicans still silently support or support their leader, but few of them, most notably Senator and former presidential candidate Mitt Romney, have spoken out against the president.
Biden surpassed Trump in the popular vote by nearly 6 million votes, or 3.8 percentage points.
However, the results of the elections are decided on the basis of the electoral college votes, as the winner of the popular vote in each state gets the votes allocated to it in the electoral college, which are determined according to several criteria, the most prominent of which is the state’s population weight.
Biden won 306 votes to 232 for Trump in the electoral college that determines the winner of the election, which is much more than the 270 votes needed for victory.
All states must document official results at least six days before the December 14 electoral college.
