Trump: We’re in talks to retake Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan
US President Donald Trump said Friday evening that talks are underway to retake Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan and re-establish a small US military presence there.
He added in a press statement at the White House that the Joe Biden administration left the base without reason, and that this was an incompetent move.
He continued, “We’ll see what happens in Bagram… We’re negotiating with Afghanistan to take it back… It should never have been abandoned”.
President Trump emphasized that they wanted to establish a small US military presence there if the base was retaken, saying, “There was no reason to give it up… We’ll keep Bagram Air Base”.
The US intervention in Afghanistan began on October 7, 2001, and continued for 20 years, when Washington withdrew its last forces from there.
The administration of former US President Joe Biden completed its withdrawal from Afghanistan on August 31, 2021, leaving behind hundreds of US citizens, millions of dollars’ worth of equipment and weapons, and thousands of Afghans who worked with the United States.
