Trump sends a message to Khamenei to negotiate a nuclear deal
US President Donald Trump revealed that he sent a letter to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei to negotiate a nuclear agreement.
This came in statements to the Fox Business Network on Friday, in which he explained that he sent the message, Thursday.
Trump stressed that he prefers to make a deal with Iran regarding its nuclear program, while warning Tehran of the consequences of not negotiating.
He stressed that Iran cannot be allowed to possess nuclear weapons.
Last February, Trump said that Iran shouldn’t have nuclear weapons, and that they prefer to reach a nuclear agreement that allows Iran to grow and develop.
Trump, who signed the presidential executive order that will revive the policy of maximum pressure on Iran, said he wasn’t happy with the decision but that he had to be tough on Iran.
For its part, Tehran denied, on Friday, receiving any messages from US President Donald Trump, following his statement that he had sent a message to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei to negotiate a nuclear agreement.
Iranian media quoted a statement by Tehran’s permanent mission to the United Nations in New York as saying that it had not received any message, in response to a question about Trump’s statement that he had sent a message to Khamenei.
Trump told Fox Business on Friday that he sent the letter on Thursday.
He stressed that he preferred to conclude a deal with Iran regarding its nuclear program, while warning Tehran of the consequences of not negotiating.
The US President stressed that Iran cannot be allowed to possess nuclear weapons.
For his part, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in an interview with AFP in Jeddah, on the sidelines of his participation in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation meeting, “As long as the policy of maximum pressure and American threats continues, we won’t enter into direct negotiations with the United States”.
Regarding Israeli threats to attack Iranian nuclear facilities, Araghchi explained that his country’s nuclear program cannot be destroyed by military means.
He warned of igniting a huge fire in the region if Iran was attacked.
