Trump reveals to his advisers his desire to avoid sanctions against Ankara because of the S400 deal with Russia
US President Donald Trump secretly told his advisers he would avoid sanctions against Ankara for buying the Russian S400 air defense system, the Wall Street Journal reported.
The newspaper quoted its own sources as saying that Trump planned next week to discuss the issue of unilateral sanctions against Turkey, with a group of senators in Congress.
According to these sources, Trump told his advisers privately that he would like to avoid imposing sanctions on Ankara, which he earlier confirmed to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The sources said that, the White House had promised senators that the president would decide whether to impose sanctions on Turkey after consulting with Foreign Secretary Mike Pompeo and national security adviser John and Bolton, who recommend a certain level of restrictions against Ankara.
According to the paper, the basis for the imposition of sanctions on Turkey is the law against the enemies of America through sanctions (CAATSA).
