The United States will soon begin ground strikes targeting “drug traffickers,” US President Donald Trump said, noting that it will target specific people, not necessarily just in Venezuela.

In new remarks, Trump stressed that it would be unwise to reveal US plans to seize more oil assets from Venezuela, noting that the country should be more conservative in this context.

“We’re eliminating drug trafficking at unprecedented levels,” Trump said, that the United States had eliminated 96% of the drugs that were smuggled by sea, calling it “a major achievement that helped save 25,000 American lives”.

Trump pointed out that these operations against “drug traffickers” won’t stop at sea only, as he stressed that land operations will soon begin in this context.

Trump claimed that “Colombia has at least three cocaine factories,” expressing displeasure over this.

While Trump claims to be fighting the drug trade, Venezuela asserts that the US escalation is aimed at stealing the country’s wealth and regime change, and one of the most obvious manifestations of this recently was Washington’s seizure of a Venezuelan oil tanker, when Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro said in a comment on the incident: “The mask fell off (referring to the United States).

“The issue isn’t drug smuggling, it’s the oil they want to steal,” he said.
