US President Donald Trump said that he has informed his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah al Sisi of his readiness to play the role of mediator in the dispute between Egypt and Ethiopia over the Renaissance Dam.

This came in a letter sent by Trump to Sisi, which was published on Truth Social on Friday.

Trump expressed his readiness to resume US mediation between Egypt and Ethiopia in order to solve the problem of sharing the water of the Nile River in a radical and permanent way.

He pointed out the great importance of the Nile River for Egypt and its people.

“I want to help you reach an outcome that will ensure the long-term water needs of Egypt, the Republic of Sudan and Ethiopia,” he said.

Trump pointed out that a permanent agreement can be reached for all the Nile Basin countries.

A successful approach to the solution is a predictable water supply during droughts for Egypt and Sudan, while allowing Ethiopia to generate very large amounts of electricity, some of which can be supplied or sold to Cairo or Khartoum.

Trump indicated that he attaches great importance to this issue, as he expressed hope that this dispute wouldn’t develop into a military conflict between the two countries.

Egypt and Sudan are calling on Ethiopia to reach a legally binding tripartite agreement on the filling and operation of the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, which began construction in 2011.
