US President Donald Trump announced in an interview broadcast on Fox News Tuesday evening, hours before Washington and Beijing were to suspend the hefty tariffs they had imposed on each other, that the United States had reached a framework for a very solid agreement with China.

“It’s time for China to open up, and that’s part of our agreement… We’re going to push China to open up… In my opinion, that’s the most interesting part” of the agreement, he added.

The two countries began suspending the additional, hefty tariffs they imposed on each other during their recent trade war on Wednesday.

As part of this trade war, the United States imposed tariffs on its imports from China at 145%, while China’s tariffs on American imports reached 125%.

However, the two countries finally agreed to reduce these rates to 30% and 10%, respectively.

In this regard, Trump said, “As you know, many years ago we opened the United States’ doors to trade, and now it’s time for China to open up”.

In the interview, Trump noted his ability to reach an agreement with China, stressing that relations with it are very good.

“I have always had a good relationship with President Xi Jinping, and of course it was cut short because of Covid,” he added.

“Other than that, I’ve always had a great relationship (with the Chinese president), I have a lot of respect for him, and we’ll see how things go,” Trump added.
