US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he had issued instructions to destroy any Iranian boats harassing American ships.

“I have instructed the US Navy to shoot and destroy any and all Iranian warships if they harass our ships at sea,” Trump wrote on his Twitter account.

During the past few days, the US Navy and the Iranian Revolutionary Guards have exchanged accusations of harassing each other’s ships in the Gulf.

A week ago, the Pentagon accused Tehran of “dangerous maneuvers” at sea. Washington said that 11 Iranian speedboats of the Revolutionary Guards “approached several times” of 6 American warships were on a monitoring mission in the northern Gulf.

In response, Tehran condemned the excessive “Hollywood” version of the events presented by the United States.

The Revolutionary Guards accused the US Navy of following “unprofessional behavior” in the Gulf.

He said that the United States “prevented the passage of the “Shaheed Siavoshi” ship in early April by following “dangerous behavior and ignoring the ship’s warnings”.

Tensions between the United States and the Islamic Republic have increased significantly since Washington decided in May 2018 to withdraw from the international nuclear agreement signed with Iran in 2015 and reimposed severe economic sanctions.

The situation was exacerbated after the killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad on January 3.
