Surprisingly, US President Donald Trump fired National Security Agency (NSA) Director General Timothy Haugh, without any official explanation from the White House or the Pentagon regarding the reasons for the decision, according to informed congressional sources and US administration officials.

According to several officials who requested anonymity, the Associated Press reported that senior military leaders were informed on Thursday of the decision to remove General Haugh, who also served as head of the Pentagon’s Cyber Command.

The sources added that the decision came without prior warning, despite Haugh having more than 33 years of experience in intelligence and cyber operations.

Remarkably, this development coincided with a meeting between Trump and political activist Laura Loomer, who later stated via X that the dismissal stemmed from what she described as the “disloyalty” of Haugh and his deputy, Wendy Noble, to the president.

She noted that Haugh’s appointment was made under former President Joe Biden, which she considered sufficient motivation to remove him from such a sensitive position in an agency described as the most powerful intelligence agency in the world.

In an indirect confirmation, Trump acknowledged that he listens to Loomer’s advice, describing her as a “great patriot,” and said, “She makes suggestions… and sometimes I listen… Her opinions are often constructive”.

General Timothy Haugh had assumed command of the National Security Agency about a year ago, in addition to overseeing the Defense Department’s Cyber Operations Command.

His dismissal sparked controversy within Washington’s political and security circles.

For his part, Democratic Senator Mark Warner, Vice Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, expressed his concern, saying, “At a time when the United States is facing unprecedented cyber threats, it’s unclear how this dismissal contributes to enhancing the security of Americans”.

Republican Representative Don Bacon praised Haugh’s performance, describing him as “an outstanding leader who has done a remarkable job,” while expressing regret that his dismissal could hinder vital intelligence operations.

This move is part of a series of sweeping changes Trump has led since returning to the presidency last January, including the dismissal of prominent figures in the military, including the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Charles Brown.

In the same context, the dismissal decisions also included Hogg’s civilian deputy at the National Security Agency, Wendy Noble, while the person who will lead the agency and its cyber command hasn’t yet been officially announced.

It’s worth noting that these developments coincide with criticism directed at the Trump administration, following leaks about some military leaders’ use of unsecured messaging apps like Signal to plan sensitive military discussions within a chat group that also included prominent media figures.
