Trump doesn’t rule out imposing more sanctions on Russia if refuses to negotiate with Ukraine
US President Donald Trump said Tuesday he would consider imposing new sanctions on Russia if President Vladimir Putin refuses to negotiate with Ukraine to reach a deal to end the war.
Asked about the possibility of imposing more sanctions on Russia if Putin doesn’t come to the negotiating table, Trump replied during a meeting with reporters at the White House, “It seems so”.
Before his inauguration on Monday, Trump pledged to end the war in Ukraine immediately upon taking office, sparking speculation that he would use US aid to force Kiev to make concessions to Russia.
In unusually critical remarks about Putin, Trump stressed on Monday that the Russian president must make a deal, adding that he would destroy Russia if he refused to do so.
Trump noted that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had told him of his desire to reach a peace agreement with Russia to end the war.
