US President Donald Trump on Saturday hailed the signing of a historic agreement with the Taliban that Washington hopes will pave the way for ending its longest wars, indicating that he will meet Taliban leaders soon.

“I will personally meet the Taliban leaders soon,” Trump said at a White House press conference.

Expressing his conviction that the Taliban wanted to “do something to prove that what happened was not a waste of time,” he issued a warning to the militants saying, “If things don’t go well, we will back away” from the agreement.

He was asked about the criticism of John Bolton, his former national security adviser, who considered the agreement “unacceptable” and replied, “No one has the right to criticize the agreement after 19 years,” adding, “What we did to the world is wonderful.”
