US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday evening a specific date for the signing of an agreement between the United States and Iran, to be followed immediately by the reopening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

The agreement, which comes after intensive negotiations, is described by Trump as a “wall that will prevent Iran from acquiring any nuclear weapons,” unlike the previous Obama-era agreement.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump revealed startling details, most notably that Iran won’t receive any money under this agreement, a radical departure from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which he described as “an easy path to nuclear weapons”.

Trump added that the United States will be responsible for extracting and destroying the nuclear dust buried under the rubble in Iran, either on Iranian or American soil.

According to the US president, his agreement is completely different from Obama’s, as he stated: “My agreement with Iran is the exact opposite; it’s a wall that prevents Iran from acquiring any nuclear weapon… In fact, Iran no longer wants a nuclear weapon and won’t acquire one, neither through purchase nor development”.

Trump emphasized his desire to work with Iran and the entire Middle East region in the long term, while also stating that there is a “perfect alternative” if the process doesn’t proceed smoothly.

Not only were the US statements echoed, but Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was quick to confirm that Pakistan was preparing for an electronic signing of the US-Iran peace agreement as soon as it was finalized.

Sharif added that the world was closer to a peace agreement than ever before, predicting it would be reached within the next 24 hours, thus reinforcing an atmosphere of cautious optimism.

Bloomberg quoted a US official as saying that negotiations are nearing a memorandum of understanding that paves the way for a broader agreement aimed at: Reopening the Strait of Hormuz and reducing regional tensions, US guarantees prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, and any easing of sanctions is contingent upon Iran fulfilling its obligations.

Bloomberg also revealed that Trump called off imminent airstrikes after progress was made in negotiations.

On the same context, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing US officials, that US Vice President J D Vance intends to travel to Geneva to sign the memorandum of understanding with Iran, giving the agreement significant political weight and confirming its seriousness.
