Trump: An important phone call with Putin… confirms: I hope the war in Ukraine is already over
US President Donald Trump on Friday announced an important phone call with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, expressing hope to end the war in Ukraine, without specifying a date for the call.
Speaking to reporters near the White House, Trump said: “I spoke with Putin… I hope this war is already over,” he said, referring to continued diplomatic efforts to end the years-long conflict.
The announcement comes days after the conclusion of the latest round of trilateral negotiations between Russia, the United States and Ukraine in Geneva (February 17-18), with the head of the Russian delegation, Vladimir Medinsky, announcing a new meeting in the near future, while Ukrainian officials indicated progress in the talks.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had previously said that Moscow is ready to pursue a negotiated solution to the Ukraine crisis, based on the understandings reached by Presidents Putin and Trump during the summit held in Alaska.
