Trinidad and Tobago put its forces on alert and recalls all its soldiers amid tensions between the US and Venezuela
Trinidad and Tobago placed its armed forces on high alert Friday and recalled all its soldiers to their bases, amid escalating tensions between the United States and neighboring Venezuela.
A message sent to members of the armed forces and police, stated, “Effective immediately, the Trinidad and Tobago Defense Forces are placed on maximum alert… All personnel are to report to their bases”.
The statement also stated that “all police leave has been cancelled”.
This mobilization comes amid US attacks against boats in the Caribbean suspected of smuggling drugs, and while US media reported that Washington is considering ground strikes in Venezuela.
The declaration of a state of alert caused panic in the capital, Port of Spain, where residents rushed to stock up on food and fuel.
But the government urged citizens to remain calm, announcing that it was in close contact with the US Embassy in Port of Spain, and according to the information received, there is no cause for concern.
US President Donald Trump stated on Friday that he isn’t considering launching strikes against Venezuela, which fears that the US military buildup in the region aims to change its regime.
