The US president announces 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports
US President Donald Trump said Sunday that the United States will impose a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum imports.
The announcement came as the US president was en route to the Super Bowl in New Orleans, the White House said.
Trump has repeatedly threatened to impose tariffs and use them as a means to push countries that have trade partnerships with the United States to adjust their policies in line with his priorities.
In the first weeks of his second term, Trump imposed tariffs on China and ordered similar steps toward Mexico and Canada.
But the White House has now suspended for a month the tariffs he ordered on Canada and Mexico after the two countries pledged to step up measures to combat the flow of the opioid fentanyl and the crossing of illegal immigrants into the United States.
The tariffs he imposed on China prompted a retaliatory response from Beijing, which in turn imposed a 15% tariff on imports of American coal and liquefied natural gas, and a 10% tariff on crude oil, as well as agricultural machinery, vehicles, and others.
Last week, Trump said European products would be targeted with tariffs very soon.
