The United States and the UK impose new sanctions targeting Russian oil sector

The US administration has added Gazprom Neft and Surgutneftegaz, two of Russia’s largest oil producers, to the sanctions list, along with more than 180 vessels, a large number of oil traders, oilfield service providers, and Russian energy officials.

The US Treasury Department said in a statement that the sanctions are targeting Russian oil production and exports.

The statement confirmed that comprehensive steps were taken to fulfill the G7 commitment to reduce Russian revenues from the energy sector, including adding Gazprom Neft and Surgutneftegaz to the sanctions list, in addition to their subsidiaries.

He pointed out that the United Kingdom also imposed sanctions on Gazprom Neft and Surgutneftegaz.

The statement indicated that the ships, known as the shadow fleet, which transport Russian oil and operate in non-transparent trade, were included in the sanctions list, and this included 183 ships, most of which are part of the shadow fleet.

He also stated that the sanctions affected two Russian companies operating in the field of marine insurance, namely Ingosstrakh and Alvastrakhovani Group.

The statement added that more than 30 Russian companies providing oil field services were included in the sanctions list, in addition to a large number of energy sector officials and managers of Russian oil companies, including senior executives of oil production companies.

In her assessment of the sanctions, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen confirmed in press statements on Friday that the United States had taken comprehensive measures against one of the most important sources of revenue that Russia uses to finance its “brutal and illegal war” against Ukraine.

As for the US State Department statement, it announced the imposition of sanctions on about 80 entities and individuals within the framework of the sanctions imposed on Russia, “including those involved in the active production and export of liquefied natural gas”.

The statement also indicated that the sanctions included individuals and entities working to expand Russian oil production capabilities, contributing to the Arctic 2 project to produce liquefied gas, in addition to workers in the metals and mining sector in Russia and senior officials at the Rosatom nuclear energy company.
