The Turkish Parliament ratifies Sweden’s accession to NATO
The Turkish Parliament on Tuesday approved Sweden’s accession to NATO in a process that was delayed for more than a year and hindered Western efforts to show firmness regarding the Russian military operation in Ukraine.
Stockholm’s request to join the alliance was approved by 287 legislators against 55 opposing votes, making Hungary the last obstacle to Sweden’s membership in the defense bloc.
For his part, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson welcomed the Turkish Parliament’s approval of his country’s membership in NATO.
“Today we are one step away from becoming a full member of NATO,” Kristersson wrote on X.
He also described “positively the Turkish Parliament’s vote in favor of Sweden’s accession to NATO”.
As Türkiye approved, now the eyes will shift towards Hungry, as the pressure will be put on Budapest until it agrees to Stockholm joining NATO.
