The trial of a German intelligence worker on charges of treason begins!

On Wednesday, the trial of a worker in the German intelligence service began on charges of treason.

Almost a year after the arrest of a 53-year-old German citizen; On suspicion of transmitting confidential information to Russia, the accused appears before the court in Berlin under strict security measures.

A 32-year-old diamond merchant is also standing trial as an accomplice of the accused.

German federal prosecutors say that German citizens transmitted secret information to Russian intelligence twice during the fall of 2022 after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

It is said that Russian intelligence paid each of the defendants, Carsten L., 450,000 euros ($486,000) and diamond merchant Arthur E., at least 400,000 Euros.

According to investigators, Carsten L. printed and photocopied nine internal intelligence documents at his workplace in Berlin and Pullach near Munich in September and October 2022.

It is said that Arthur E. handed over secret information to Russian intelligence, and met with employees of the intelligence service in Moscow several times.

Carsten L was arrested in Berlin on December 21, 2022, and his home and workplace were searched.

Arthur E. was also arrested in December 2023 as a suspected accomplice when he arrived in Munich on a flight from the United States of America.

The trial is scheduled to last for 51 days, until July 17, 2024.

Because of the large amount of information classified as confidential, most court hearings will be held behind closed doors.
