The Syrian President Ahmed al Sharaa is heading on Wednesday on an official visit to the Russian capital, Moscow, where he is scheduled to meet his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

The visit of President Sharaa is his second since he took power, and the first after the recent developments in northeastern Syria, which witnessed confrontations between the Syria Democratic Forces and the Syrian army, and resulted in the latter’s control of the entire governorates of Raqqa and Deir Ezzor, in addition to large areas of Aleppo and Hasakah.

President Ahmed al Sharaa visited Moscow in mid-October accompanied by a number of ministers, where the Russian president received him in the Kremlin, in the first visit of its kind after the fall of the Assad regime on December 8, 2024.

The talks focused on strengthening cooperation in the fields of economy, food security, and energy, while stressing the importance of maintaining stability in Syria and the region, and deepening the partnership between the two countries.

The visit was preceded by the arrival of Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al Shaibani in Moscow, in the first official visit after the political change in Syria, and the Syrian Minister of Defense, Major General Murhaf Abu Qusra, paid an official visit to Russia on October 31, during which he discussed supporting military cooperation and exchanging experiences in the fields of training and others.
