Syrian president Ahmed al Sharaa arrived in Nicosia, the capital of Greek Cyprus, on Friday to participate in an emergency European Union summit.

The Syrian News Channel reported: “President Ahmed al Sharaa arrives in the Cypriot capital, Nicosia.”

The Syrian News Channel noted that his visit comes to participate in the European Union’s emergency summit entitled “Saving the Summer”.

Nicosia is hosting the European summit on Friday, with the aim of addressing the repercussions of the acute energy crisis resulting from tensions and a possible closure in the Strait of Hormuz, which is a vital artery for global oil supplies.

The summit will be attended by the leaders of the member states, headed by the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, and the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, as well as the President of the Greek Cypriot administration, Nikos Christodoulides.

The summit will feature an expanded working lunch bringing together European leaders with their counterparts from the Middle East, most notably Sharaa, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al Sisi, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, Jordanian Crown Prince Hussein bin Abdullah, and Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary-General Jassim al Badawi.

The discussions will focus on unifying European policies to mitigate the effects of the crisis on prices and supplies, diversifying energy sources, and avoiding an economically catastrophic summer, in addition to other international issues such as common security.
