The second American warning, within two days, of the UAE from normalizing relations with Damascus

James Jeffrey, the US special envoy to Syria, renewed a warning to the UAE, that it could face sanctions if it continued its efforts to normalize relations with the Syrian government.

“The UAE knows that the United States strongly opposes Abu Dhabi’s normalization of its relations with the Assad regime,” Jeffrey said in a press conference held Friday evening, Friday, “The Emirates may be subject to sanctions under the newly ratified” Caesar Act “in the American Congress”.

Asked about the UAE’s efforts to open its embassy again in Damascus, Jeffrey replied: “They (Emiratis) are an independent country, they can make these decisions, but we have made clear to them that this is a very bad idea”.

He continued, saying: “These steps will not help in implementing the decisions of the UN Security Council or in ending the conflict, which represents a problem for the entire region”.

He stressed that “any company or person, whether Emirati or otherwise, will be the target of sanctions if conditions apply to him in terms of economic activities “With the Assad regime”.

It is reported that, at the end of 2018, the UAE reopened its embassy in Damascus, following restoration work after a closure that lasted nearly six years.

And the US “Caesar Act” came into effect last Wednesday, with Washington announcing sanctions against 39 people and entities associated with the Syrian government, and the US State Department said that the targeted entities include President Bashar al Assad and his wife Asma, calling them “engineers of the suffering of the Syrian people”.

Under the sanctions, anyone who deals with the Syrian government is exposed to travel restrictions or financial sanctions, regardless of their location in the world.
