The Russian President praises the new nuclear missile test
Russian President Vladimir Putin has hailed the test of a new nuclear-powered cruise missile, which the Russian military said has a range of at least 14,000 kilometers (8,700 miles).
“This week, the Russian Armed Forces conducted strategic offensive force exercises, during which they conducted combat training launches of all components of the Russian strategic nuclear forces, in addition to testing advanced weapons,” Putin said during a meeting with the command of the joint forces group participating in the special military operation in Ukraine.
Putin added, “The modernity of our armed forces, or rather our nuclear deterrence, is at its highest level. Perhaps it’s no exaggeration to say that it’s at a level higher than that of at least all nuclear-armed states”.
Putin explained that the Burevestnik nuclear-powered cruise missile is a unique product that no one else in the world possesses.
He continued, “There is still a lot of work to be done to bring these weapons into combat readiness, and that is clear… All regulations must be followed… However, the main objectives have now been achieved”.
Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov said that the Burevestnik cruise missile was tested on October 21, according to a video of a meeting with military commanders posted on the Russian news agency TASS’s Telegram channel.
Gerasimov continued: “The real difference between this and previous tests is that the missile flew for several hours, covering a distance of 14,000 kilometers, and this isn’t the maximum”.
The senior military official added that the Burevestnik missile’s performance characteristics allow it to be used with guaranteed accuracy against heavily protected targets at any distance.
He added that the missile, which flew for about 15 hours, is capable of penetrating missile defense networks.
