“When the name Aleppo is mentioned, you cannot find a son of the homeland whose heart doesn’t tremble,” Bahçeli said, according to statements attributed to him.

“Because Aleppo, in its very essence, is Turkish and Muslim… This isn’t just what we say, but history, geography, and facts say it… Our ancestors say it, and the Turkish flag raised on the Aleppo Citadel says it”.

A Syrian man holding Turkish citizenship placed the Turkish flag on top of the Aleppo Citadel, which sparked controversy and disapproval among Syrians on social media.

Bahceli’s statements were accompanied by the hashtag Halep82, in a reference by tweeters to the fact that “Aleppo is the 82nd Turkish province”.

Bahceli added in other statements that “Bashar al Assad didn’t respond to Türkiye’s extended hand to him, and didn’t accept the Turkish army’s war against terrorism”.

He also added that Syria is a controversial country but it’s not too late; Assad can still have a dialogue with Türkiye but without preconditions, because Türkiye has no ambitions in Syria at all.

According to the Turkish politician, Assad’s expression of his desire for normalization is in his interest first, and then in the interest of his country, according to what was reported by Turkish media.
