The Israeli army informs the Netanyahu government that it’s impossible to achieve both goals of the Gaza war simultaneously
According to the Israeli media, the Israeli army informed the political leadership that it’s impossible to eliminate Hamas and release the Israeli detainees it holds simultaneously.
Israeli Army Radio reported on Monday that “the army informed the political leadership that it is currently impossible to achieve both goals of the war simultaneously (eliminating Hamas and releasing the detainees), and that we must decide what to do first”.
The radio station explained that the army believes its necessary to return the prisoners first, without providing further details, or whether the political leadership has responded to this.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, citing an informed source, that Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir told the government that further operations in the Gaza Strip would threaten the lives of the Israelis being held captive.
Netanyahu’s government has set goals for its war on Gaza, including eliminating Hamas and recovering those held captive in Gaza.
This comes as the Israeli army has recently faced escalating Palestinian resistance operations in Gaza, resulting in numerous deaths and injuries.
It also comes amid Israeli media reports of an escalating dispute between the Chief of Staff and the Prime Minister over whether to pursue a military option in Gaza despite the risks and losses, or to move toward a deal with Hamas that includes a prisoner exchange and a ceasefire.
A new round of indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas has begun in the Qatari capital, Doha, in an effort to reach an agreement.
This comes after US President Donald Trump announced that a ceasefire agreement could be reached this week.
Trump is scheduled to meet with Netanyahu today at the White House, and the US president previously indicated the possibility of announcing an agreement on Gaza following the meeting.
Tel Aviv estimates there are 50 Israeli hostages in Gaza, 20 of whom are still alive.
Meanwhile, more than 10,400 Palestinians are languishing in its prisons, suffering torture, starvation, and medical neglect, many of whom have died, according to Palestinian and Israeli human rights and media reports.
