The Israeli army criticizes the Israeli political leadership: The talk about Hamas’ destruction is a sand in the eyes of Israelis
Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari on Wednesday criticized the political leadership, saying that its talk of destroying Hamas is like sand in the eyes of Israelis.
Since the beginning of Israel’s devastating war on the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has put the destruction of Hamas as one of the goals of the war, although many military analysts and Israeli observers have doubted that this can be achieved.
In an interview with Israel’s private Channel 13, Hagari said, “Talk about the destruction of Hamas is like throwing sand in the eyes of the public”.
“Hamas is an idea, you can’t destroy an idea, the political level must find an alternative to it or it will remain”.
In response to Hagari’s remarks, Netanyahu said, “The political-security cabinet headed by the prime minister has identified the destruction of Hamas’s military and authoritarian capabilities as one of the goals of the war”.
Netanyahu, in a statement published by his office on his official account on X, added, “The Israeli army is committed to that, of course”.
During the same interview, Haghari referred to the Israeli army’s announcement on June 8 that it had rescued four prisoners through a military operation in the Nuseirat refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip.
The IDF spokesperson acknowledged that not all abductees can be released through military operations.
The operation resulted in a massacre in which the Israeli army killed 274 Palestinians, including 64 children and 57 women, while hundreds of civilians were injured.
Hagari also referred to the situation on Israel’s northern border, “We’re ready for any scenario against Hezbollah, and any military campaign against Lebanon will end with an agreement, and we are committed to returning the residents of the north to their homes safely”.
He commented on Hezbollah’s publication of a video filmed by spy drone over Haifa Bay in northern Israel, and claimed that intercepting the drone would have posed a danger to the residents of Haifa.
On Tuesday, Hezbollah released a video of what it said were aerial surveillance of military installations and vital areas in northern Israel, including the port of Haifa, by a reconnaissance aircraft that was not detected by the Israeli military.
