The German Chancellor makes phone call with the Russian president for first time in two years
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz held a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the first in about two years.
Scholz plans to hold the conversation on November 15, according to Bloomberg.
A German government source confirmed that the call between the two leaders lasted for an hour, the first since December 2022.
The German government spokesman said that Scholz stressed during the call the importance of Russia starting negotiations with Ukraine in order to reach a just and lasting peace.
He added that Germany will continue to support Ukraine as long as necessary, calling for an end to the war in Ukraine.
The last phone conversation between Scholz and Putin dates back to December 2022, shortly before the start of the Russian military operation in February 2022.
In that conversation, Scholz tried to convince Putin to reverse his decision to launch a military operation against Ukraine, according to Bloomberg.
In return, Putin called on Germany to reconsider its position on arming Kiev, noting that the Russian army had long avoided targeting sites inside Ukraine, but he made it clear that these strikes were now an inevitable response to attacks targeting Russian infrastructure by Ukrainian forces.
