The French president harshly criticize the Israeli government over the continued aggression in Gaza

French President Emmanuel Macron said Tuesday that what Benjamin Netanyahu’s government is doing today is unacceptable and shameful, adding, “It’s not for the president of the republic to say ‘its genocide,’ but for historians”.

He said that the humanitarian crisis is the most serious” since October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on Israel that sparked the current war in the Gaza Strip.

“It’s an unacceptable human tragedy,” the French president continued.

According to the Israeli military, of the 251 hostages taken during the October 7attack, 57 are still being held in Gaza, including 34 who were killed.

During an interview with French television station TF1, Macron recalled that he was one of the few leaders who went to the border between Egypt and Gaza, describing it as one of the worst things he had seen.

Macron denounced the Israelis’ preventing the entry of all aid sent by France and other countries.

He also noted that the issue of reconsidering the cooperation agreements between the European Union and Israel is on the table.

The Netherlands has asked the European Commission to examine whether the Israeli government is complying with Article 2 of the Association Agreement with Israel, under penalty of reconsideration of the agreement.

The article stipulates that relations between the European Union and Israel are based on respect for human rights and democratic principles.

Earlier on Tuesday, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot told the French National Assembly, “Its a legitimate request, and I call on the European Commission to examine it”.

“We’ve fought tirelessly to end this conflict… Today, we need the United States,” Macron said, considering that the lever lies in the hands of US President Donald Trump.
