The Financial Times reported on Tuesday, that the Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered the United States to halt its war on Ukraine and freeze the current front line.

The Financial Times, citing people familiar with the matter, said that Putin made this proposal in early April during a meeting with US envoy Steve Witkoff in St. Petersburg as part of the ongoing ceasefire negotiations in Ukraine.

For Moscow, a cessation of hostilities and a freeze on the front line would mean abandoning its demand for control over all of the Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhia regions, large parts of which are controlled by Russian forces.

The Financial Times quoted its sources as saying that the Russian president is willing to make this concession if the United States agrees to his main demands, namely recognition of Moscow’s sovereignty over Crimea, which it annexed in 2014, and Ukraine’s refusal to join NATO.

In contrast, Kyiv and its European allies are demanding the withdrawal of Russian forces from all Ukrainian territory and a return to the status quo ante 2014, a demand that US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth deemed unrealistic in February.
