The European Union wants to announce the thirteenth package of sanctions on Russia on the occasion of the second anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, according to diplomatic sources on Friday.

These diplomats, who requested to remain anonymous, said that the discussions are continuing without further details.

A senior European official, who requested anonymity, indicated that the sanctions would affect individuals and entities.

He said that European Union Foreign Minister Josep Borrell is very interested in the idea of imposing a set of sanctions targeting mainly individuals and entities on the second anniversary of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.

The Baltic states and Poland are among the countries most supportive of sanctions targeting the nuclear sector or Russian liquefied natural gas imports, but other member states are more hesitant.

In December, the 27 EU countries announced the twelfth package of sanctions that banned the import of Russian diamonds, a sector that represents revenues for the Russian economy ranging between four and $5 billion.

It’s also studying, in coordination with the G7 countries, ways to use its frozen Russian assets, which amount to about $300 billion.
